Best Preparation for Graduate School EVER

Best Preparation for Graduate School EVER

This class directly relates to my future graduate project and I am learning so much...

So I know I need a lab class to graduate, and this counts towards a major requirement in biology. However, the biggest motivation for me to take MIT classes in general - the MOST IMPORTANT reason - is the amazing potential to learn from so many amazing scientists who are passionate about teaching. I have taken other lab classes at MIT, but none of them have done as thorough a job at forcing me to understand the anatomy of a scientific report, making me communicate my science in virtually every different format, and developing my teamwork skills as much as in this class. There is so much support that, even though each week brings with it a million more due dates, I believe there is no reason why I should miss out on anything that is going on. What is even better is that all the tools that I need to have mastered for graduate school - ImageJ, MATLAB, especially CRISPR, which I plan to do a lot of as the focus of my graduate school project - are being done right here and now!!! I have never seen a lab class where we take completely novel questions that have never been answered before and apply our own analyses on the spot to uncover novel answers. This is truly what science is about and what is truly lacking in other lab classes (or classes in general) that I've seen. I am so happy to solidify my working knowledge of molecular biology and bioengineering in this class and will definitely use all of the communication tips and tricks that I never considered before when presenting slides and writing reports next year in grad school. I wish I knew some of these things for past UROP and other scientific presentations I've given and am looking forward to even more!!!!

Also - to add to the diversity of memes - here are my favorite science memes (+ citations):

Lab safety is important - that's why we started with a quiz on it:
